The Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area is bisected in a roughly southwest-northeast direction by Big Creek.  There are three marked trails within the wildlife management area. The two trails north of Big Creek are the St. Marys Falls Nature Trail and the Big Creek Hiking-Nature Trail. The trail south of Big Creek is the Rock Falls Trail.

North of Big Creek, accessed from the entrance off of LA 915, awaits the visitor the very strenuous seven mile Big Creek Hiking-Nature Trail. See map link (WMA Map) at lower left for location. You might want to allow a day or half-day to hike this trail, depending on your physical condition and available time.

The St. Marys Falls Nature Trail is north of the Big Creek Trail and it  leads to  a  small waterfall. The photo below shows the sign at the trail head. See the WMA Map link at lower left to see where the trail is located.

South of Big Creek by way of the entrance off of LA 8 is the nature trail leading to the 20 foot Rock Falls.

For more information on this trail, including photographs of the area, see my waterfall page.

There is a concerted effort by LDWF to make the Rock Falls trail more informative so as to add to an already wonderful experience. A pavilion was added to the entrance of the trail, a parking area is across from the entrance  and  indigenous plant life is being posted with identifying markers. To add to the excitement, more features will be added in the near future. Stay tuned…

Additional content in regards to these trails will be added as time permits. I have not explored both of the northern trails ,so for now your best source of information would be the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries office.

Make sure you have a valid license or stamp issued by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries when you visit the Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area !

7 mile trail is blazed but not well trodden past the Big Creek. Grown up in switch cane.

  4. Michelle says:

No, Michelle, I am sorry but within the Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area there are no horse trails and no horse riding allowed.
